Materials can include granite, onyx, marble, quartz and even semi precious stones. Some of the designs utilize gold on the stone; which can be as simple as traditional leafing or become as elaborate as suspending gold dust in a transparent solution and layering to create special effects.

The large Pompeian and Klimt murals and some smaller panels shown here utilize sections of very thin (10 mm) stone in areas as large as the design will allow which are then assembled much like a puzzle. The pieces are then glued to lightweight honeycomb support panels as a backing, facilitating installation of large murals. In many of these mosaics the finish on the stone is matte in order to soften the colors or to give more brilliance to the gold.
