Maybe
that's it, in the end, the origin of the legend: his hands. The same hands
that played the violin and endlessly hoed the vineyard, interpreted the
Michelangelesque
figurations and the modern abstractions, he gave life to a procession
of sacred statues and to the uneven forms of contemporary art.It was easy
to encounter him on the short walk between his studio and the bar: in
one shirt pocket, his cigarettes, and in the other a macquette of one
of the many works of art that are being shown today in the various museums
and squares of the world.
Today the Studio is called "Studio Sem Scultori Associati Srl",
this too was a creation of Sem in 1991 with the scope of bringing to light
the capacity of his artisans and to share the responsibilities. He transformed
the studio into an Ltd.,which today includes: Sergio Benedetti, one of
the finest finishers in the area, who began collaborating with Sem in
the 1950's; Keara McMartin, who arrived in Pietrasanta from the U.S.A.
in 1980, beginning at the studio in 1983 and over time becoming his right
hand to finally take over the direction of the studio after Sem's death
in 1997; and two of Sem's sons, Massimiliano and Pierangelo Ghelardini.
In the last ten years not much has changed; perhaps the most significant
is the relationship between the artist and the stone.

Until a few years ago models which were originally conceived for bronze
or other materials were only later translated into marble, today many
sculptors create a model exclusively to take advantage of marble; making
use of transparency, color, a particular veining or a structure that enhances
the form. In these aspects the artisans of the studio remain, as was Sem,
formidable advisors to the artists, guiding their vision and creativity
in choosing the most suitable stone.
